Insurance discounts granted and revoked by same inspection firm ...

It appears Coconut Creek resident Sandy Teich wasn't the only one who hired an inspection firm that said her home upgrades qualified for insurance discounts only to have the very same firm do another inspection at the insurer's expense and take the discounts away.

Eight South Floridians called or wrote this week to say they had the same experience. Most are insured by Citizens and all said they had the same inspection firm as Teich. That firm did more than 17,316 of the re-inspections Citizens processed as of Dec. 20.

Phil Calder of Tamarac wrote: "Citizens hired [a firm] to do my inspection which is the one of the same companies...who gave me a perfect inspection two months earlier!" He said he plans to leave Citizens because the insurer claims it's not subject to laws that require insurers to handle claims in good faith.

Neil Leibowitz, of Plantation, wrote that he received a few, minor discounts about three years ago from a firm and "a few months ago, another [inspector from the same firm] came over, to verify the discounts I received based on the earlier inspection. If you read the two reports, it doesn't sound like these two inspectors are talking about the same house." He said Gov. Rick Scott has advocated larger rate hikes for Citizens so consumers will go elsewhere: "Only problem is that 'elsewhere,' is essentially nowhere, since the only companies available seem to be start-ups, third rate, or pure scams. I was taken out of Citizens twice in the past few years. Both companies didn't last two years.....and these were years in which we had no hurricane damage to contend with."

Tom Steder wrote: "My sons property was reinspected by the SAME... inspector as the original report and was drastically different from the original. Nail spacing had changed on the roof? The roof to wall attachment had changed? All of this while NOTHING had been done to the roof. The premium increase was ludicrous."

About a dozen homeowners reported they had different inspection firms both times but had the same result: a much higher premium.

A few said it paid to fight their insurers for legitimate discounts and one said her State Farm agent helped her with it. Others said shopping around made sense. Nina and Frank Panuzzo of Plantation said their premium with State Farm after the insurer's re-inspection increased to $4,380, up 37 percent from the year before and 62 percent from 2010. With a deductible of roughly $16,000, they said they wondered, "Why have insurance?" But they shopped around and found an insurer, an AAA affiliate, that offered a premium of $3,564 with a much lower deductible.

Teich, whose premium with Citizens increased by about $850, or 23 percent, reported today at the insurer has agreed to refund about $500. She provided Citizens with NOA documents for some of her home upgrades earlier this month.

Microbial communities on skin affect humans' attractiveness to mosquitoes

Thursday, December 29, 2011

The microbes on your skin determine how attractive you are to mosquitoes, which may have important implications for malaria transmission and prevention, according to a study published Dec. 28 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Without bacteria, human sweat is odorless to the human nose, so the microbial communities on the skin play a key role in producing each individual's specific body odor. The researchers, led by Niels Verhulst of Wageningen University in the Netherlands, conducted their experiments with the Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquito, which plays an important role in malaria transmission. They found that individuals with a higher abundance but lower diversity of bacteria on their skin were more attractive to this particular mosquito. They speculate individuals with more diverse skin microbiota may host a selective group of bacteria that emits compounds to interfere with the normal attraction of mosquitoes to their human hosts, making these individuals less attractive, and therefore lower risk to contracting malaria. This finding may lead to the development of personalized methods for malaria prevention.

Anonymous targets Sony over SOPA, Nintendo quietly withdraws support

When the howling voice of Jim Morrison sung the words ?They got the guns, but we got the numbers; gonna win yeah, we?re taking over!? in 1968 he was referring to the 60?s counter-culture vs. traditional culture. The same words, however, could also be today?s rallying cry for SOPA opposition. You could say that companies like GoDaddy have ?the guns? (billions of dollars), but the geeks, pirates, and supporters of internet freedom have the numbers. GoDaddy lost ? by being pressured into switching its position, opposing SOPA, yet still losing customers. Now Sony and Nintendo are caught in the opposition?s crosshairs, and may be in the process of performing their own 180? shift.

Sony and Nintendo were previously on the House of Representatives? list of SOPA supporters. Now Nintendo has disappeared from the list, and only Sony?s music divisions remain. The companies, hoping to avoid drawing attention, have yet to acknowledge the change or make any public comment on it.

Apparently the move hasn?t been enough to satisfy internet ?hacktivist? group Anonymous. The group has released a video (spoken in the group?s customary text-to-speech voice) in which it threatens to attack Sony. It declares that Sony?s support of SOPA is a death warrant for the company, and that it will ? once again ? bring down the Playstation Network. In dramatic rhetoric, Anonymous adds that it will extinguish Sony, and ?dismantle its phantom from the internet?:

It isn?t clear why Anonymous is targeting the PSN when only Sony?s music divisions are officially supporting SOPA, but the PSN is the area where Anonymous can do the most damage.

History repeating itself?

If Sony?s execs have any memory whatsoever, then they must be quivering in their boots. Earlier this year the company went through its most embarrassing ? and expensive ? ordeal in its history when it had PSN subscribers? account information stolen, and then suffered through multiple outages. Anonymous denied involvement, though many believe that it was at least partially responsible. No matter who was behind it, the hacking is widely viewed as revenge for Sony?s legal attacks on jailbreaker George Hotz (now a Facebook employee). Though Sony?s music and gaming divisions are separate, it will be interesting to see if it pulls a GoDaddy or remains defiant.

Sony isn?t, however, the only public entity being targeted by Anonymous; the group has also threatened to ?declare their fury? on Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift for allegedly supporting SOPA.

Emerging Market Debt: The Best Investment For 2012

Emerging market debt could be one of the best investment opportunities for the coming year. Emerging markets offer strong sovereign fundamentals combined with strong growth prospects driven by a number of different factors. While much of this potential has been realized in the equity markets, investors haven?t quite priced the growth into the debt markets.

Emerging Market Debt Catalysts

Emerging markets are expected to see strong growth over the coming years. The primary drivers behind this growth are young populations with few children on the way, which has created what some economists refer to as a ?demographic dividend.? Ultimately, these trends are expected to lead to strong productivity gains and domestic spending.

Emerging market equities have enjoyed an extended surge over the past few years, but emerging market bonds are only beginning to enjoy some of the upside. These bonds are under-owned by international investors and represent the future of global investing, according to JP Morgan?s global strategist Tom Elliott in a recent Bloomberg interview.

Investing in Emerging Market Debt

Emerging market debt comes in two flavors:

  • Dollar Denominated (DD) ? These are largely Latin American bonds that are backed by very solid economies posting significant growth rates.
  • Local Currency (LC) ? These are largely Asian bonds that also have solid economies, but perhaps slightly more risk, especially given China?s situation.

Some popular emerging market ETFs, include:

  • PowerShares Emerging Markets Sovereign Debt (PCY) (DD)
  • iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond (EMB) (DD)
  • WisdomTree Emerging Markets Local Debt (ELD) (LC)
  • Market Vectors Emerging Market Local Currency Bond (EMLC) (LC)
  • iShares Emerging Markets Local Currency Bond (LEMB) (LC)

Each of these options has various advantages and disadvantages, but they are all great options for investing in emerging market debt. Investors may want to consider purchasing a combination of dollar denominated and local currency ETFs in order to diversify their exposure to the various regions around the world and hedge against any isolated risks.

NKoreans salute, cry for late leader Kim Jong Il (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea's next leader escorted his father's hearse in an elaborate state funeral on a bitter, snowy day Wednesday, bowing and saluting in front of tens of thousands of citizens who wailed and stamped their feet in grief for Kim Jong Il.

Son and successor Kim Jong Un was head mourner on the gray day in Pyongyang, walking with one hand on the black hearse that carried his father's coffin on its roof, his other hand raised in salute, his head bowed against the wind.

At the end of the 2 1/2-hour procession, rifles fired 21 times as Kim Jong Un stood flanked by the top party and military officials who are expected to be his inner circle of advisers. Kim then saluted again as goose-stepping soldiers carrying flags and rifles marched by.

Although analysts say Kim Jong Un is on the path toward cementing his power and all moves in North Korea so far ? from titles giving him power over the ruling party and military and his leading position in the funeral procession ? point in that direction, his age and inexperience leave questions about Kim's long-term prospects. Whereas his father was groomed for power for 20 years before taking over, the younger Kim has had only about two years.

He also faces the huge challenges of running a country that struggles to feed its people even as it pursues a nuclear weapons program that has earned it international sanctions and condemnation.

Kim Jong Il ? who led with absolute power after his father Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, through a famine that killed hundreds of thousands and the pursuit of nuclear and missile programs ? died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69.

Mourners in parkas lined the streets of Pyongyang, waving, stamping and crying as the convoy bearing his coffin passed. Some struggled to get past security personnel holding back the crowd.

"How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."

The dramatic scenes of grief showed how effectively North Korea built a personality cult around Kim Jong Il despite chronic food shortages and decades of economic hardship.

A large challenge for North Korea's propaganda apparatus will be "to counter the public's perception that the new leader is a spoiled child of privilege," said Brian Myers, an expert on North Korean propaganda at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea.

"Having Kim Jong Un trudge mournfully next to the hearse in terrible weather was a very clever move," Myers said.

Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was well under way. The young man, who is in his late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "supreme leader" of the party, state and army.

Kim wore a long, dark overcoat as he strode alongside his father's hearse accompanied by top party officials behind him and key military leaders on the other side of the limousine ? a lineup that was a good look at who will be the core leadership in North Korea.

North Korea now turns to Thursday's memorial ceremony. Although there will be tributes to Kim Jong Il, the country will be turning toward Kim Jong Un, analysts said.

"The message will be clear: Kim Jong Un now leads the country and there is no alternative," said Kim Yeon-su, a North Korea expert at the state-run Korea National Defense University in South Korea.

There will also be more attention paid to the inner circle forming around Kim Jong Un.

On Wednesday, he was accompanied by Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, who is expected to be crucial in helping Kim Jong Un take power.

Also escorting the limousine were military chief Ri Yong Ho and People's Armed Forces Minster Kim Yong Chun. Their presence indicates they will be important players as the younger Kim consolidates his leadership. Top Workers' Party officials Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and senior military officer Kim Jong Gak also took prominent positions.

The early part of Wednesday's funeral ceremony was shrouded in secrecy, as in 1994, when Kim Il Sung died. Back then, Kim Jong Il and top officials held a private, hourlong ceremony inside the Kumsusan palace before the procession through the city, according to his official biography.

Pyongyang's foreign diplomats were invited to attend the procession, though few other outsiders appeared to be allowed into the country for the funeral. One foreign diplomat in Pyongyang, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of her work, said funereal music played and people wept as the convoy left Kumsusan followed by a large number of vehicles and army jeeps.

After showing taped footage of mourners and documentaries of Kim Jong Il, state TV began airing the procession, showing cars moving slowly through the snowy city, led by a limousine carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.

Wednesday's procession had a stronger military presence than 1994.

Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a "military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the world.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party last year.

After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to solidify his power by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at the procession.

Russian court may ban Hare Krishna text

(AP) ? A Russian court is to decide Wednesday whether a religious text central to the global Hare Krishna movement is "extremist' and should be banned, in a case that has angered Hindus around the world and highlights the continuing challenges for minority religions in Russia.

Prosecutors in the Siberian city of Tomsk have argued that the Russian translation of "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" promotes "social discord" and hatred toward nonbelievers. The text is a combination of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism's holiest scriptures, and commentary by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness that is often called the Hare Krishna movement.

The prosecutors are asking the court to include the book on the Federal List of Extremist Materials, which bans more than 1,000 texts including Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and books distributed by the Jehovah's Witness and Scientology movements.

Yuri Pleshkov, a spokesman for the group in Russia, said the book in question has existed in Russia for 25 years and has never inspired violence or extremist activity.

"On the contrary, this book teaches humane attitude towards all living beings," Pleshkov said.

The trial follows this year's ban on the construction of a Hare Krishna village in Tomsk and is based on an assessment by professors at Tomsk University, who concluded that "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" includes strong language against nonbelievers and promotes religious hatred and discrimination on the basis of gender, race, nationality and language.

The trial began in June and was scheduled to conclude on Dec. 19, just after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day visit to Russia. That day protesters gathered outside the Russian consulate in Kolkata, and the speaker of India's lower house of parliament adjourned the body for several hours after members began shouting in anger over the proposed ban.

Officials in Tomsk agreed to hear further testimony from experts and the Russian ombudsman for human rights and postponed the court decision until Wednesday.

Indian officials last week appealed to high-level Russian authorities to intervene.

The Bhagavad Gita "is not merely a religious text, but one of the defining treatises of Indian thought," said Indian Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra in a statement. "The Bhagavad Gita has circulated freely across the world for centuries and there is not a single instance of it having encouraged extremism."

The Foreign Ministry insisted that the Tomsk court is not taking issue with core Hindu scripture itself, but rather with the author's commentary and poor translation in "Bhagavad Gita As It Is."

"I would like to emphasize that this is not about 'Bhagavad Gita,' a religious philosophical poem, which forms part of the great Indian epic Mahabharata and is one of the most famous pieces of the ancient Hindu literature," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a briefing in Moscow on Thursday, adding that the book was first published in Russian in 1788.

Still, followers of the Hare Krishna movement in Russia see the proposed ban as a result of continued intolerance of minority religions by the Russian Orthodox Church. Pleshkov estimates there are at least 150,000 Hare Krishna devotees in Russia.

"The current problem is, above all, the misuse of the law on combating extremism," Pleshkov said. "It is used to search for enemies where they can not even be defined."

In 2005 a Russian Orthodox archbishop asked the mayor of Moscow to ban the construction of a proposed Hare Krishna temple, calling the Hindu deity Krishna "an evil demon, the personified power of hell opposing God," according to Interfax. The temple was later allowed in a Moscow suburb.

(AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh, File)

Four new types of American shoppers have emerged this holiday season.

There's the bargain hunter who times deals. The midnight buyer who stays up late for discounts. The returner who gets buyer's remorse. And the "me" shopper who self-gifts.

It's the latest shift by consumers in the fourth year of a weak U.S. economy. Shoppers are expected to spend $469.1 billion during the holiday shopping season that runs from November through December. While it won't be known just how much Americans spent until the season ends on Saturday, it's already clear they are shopping differently than they have in years past.

"We're seeing different types of buying behavior in a new economic reality," says C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group.

    THE BARGAIN TIMER

Cost-conscious shoppers haven't just been looking for bargains this season. They've also been more deliberate about when to find those deals. Many believe the biggest bargains come at the beginning and end of the season, which has created a kind of "dumbbell effect" in sales.

For the week ended on Nov. 26, which included the traditional start of the holiday shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving, stores had the biggest sales surge compared with the prior week since 1993, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Stores Sales Index. The cumulative two-week-sales drop-off that followed marked the biggest percentage decline since 2000. Then, stores had another surge in the final days, as retailers stepped up their promotions again.

"Shoppers are budgeting their money and time," says Paco Underhill, whose company, Envirosell, studies how consumers behave in stores. "They're focused on being opportunistic bargain shopping vultures."

Kalilah Middleton, 30, of Queens, is one of them. Starting late on Thanksgiving night, she spent five hours and $400 at Wal-Mart and Target. She bought a TV and clothing at 50 percent off. Then, she waited until Christmas Eve to shop again because she believed she'd get better deals later in the season.

"This is when you get the best deals," says Middleton, an office manager, about her holiday shopping.

Going forward, shoppers are expecting even bigger discounts. According to America's Research Group research firm, 34 percent of shoppers say they want to see post-Christmas discounts of about 70 to 80 percent, up from 20 percent last year.

    THE MIDNIGHT BUYER

Used to be, bargain shoppers would wake up at the crack of dawn to take advantage of big discounts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. This year, some shoppers instead stayed up late on Thanksgiving night to get deals.

This behavior was in large part due to retailers' efforts to outdo each other during the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Stores like Macy's, Best Buy and Target for the first time opened at midnight on Thanksgiving night, offering deals that once were reserved for the next day.

Twenty-four percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores at midnight, according to a poll by the National Retail Federation, the industry's biggest trade group. That's up from 9.5 percent the year before when only a few stores were open during that time.

Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were ages 18 to 34. That percentage was higher than among 35- to 54-year-olds, of whom 23.5 percent were in stores by midnight.

Macy's, for one, drew 10,000 people to its midnight opening. Terry Lundgren, Macy's CEO, says many of them were young people who turned out for the Justin Bieber $65 gift sets and discounted fashions.

Anika Ruud, 15, of Boca Raton, Fla., went out with her four cousins to Macy's at midnight and then shopped at Target until 2:30 a.m. She picked up two bras at Macy's for $10. Then, she and her cousins went home to bed.

"It's always been inconvenient," Ruud says of the traditional 4 a.m. Black Friday openings of years past. "No one likes to wake up early."

    THE RETURNER

Shoppers who were lured into stores by bargains gleefully loaded up on everything from discounted tablet computers to clothing early in the holiday season. But soon after, many of them were rushing back to return the items they bought.

For instance, Elizabeth Yamada, 55, of Fort Lee, N.J., says she got caught up with the shopping frenzy over the Thanksgiving weekend and picked up a $350 coat that was marked down more than 50 percent off at Macy's. She ended up returning the item one week later.

"It was nice, but I didn't need it," says Yamada, who works part-time as a waitress and a hospital aide. "It was impulsive shopping. But I am doing more reflecting."

    It's all about buyer's remorse.

For every dollar stores take in this holiday season, it's expected they will have to give back 9.9 cents in returns, up from 9.8 last year, according to the a survey of 110 retailers the NRF. It would be the highest return rate since the recession. In better economic times, it's about 7 cents.

Stores have themselves to blame for the higher returns. They lured shoppers in with deals of up to 60 percent off as early as October. Because of the deals, shoppers spent more than they normally would. And retailers' return policies have been more lax since 2008, with some sweetening their policies even more this year.

    THE "ME" SHOPPER

One for you; one for me.

After scrimping on themselves during the recession, Americans turned to shopping for themselves. It's a trend that started last year but became more prevalent this season.

According to the NRF, spending for non-gift items will increase by 16 percent this holiday season to $130.43 per person. That's the highest number recorded since it started tracking it in 2004.

"This season, the consumer put herself ahead of the giving," says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with market research firm The NPD Group.

Betty Thomas, a health care coordinator at a hospital in Raleigh, N.C., says she spent $1,700 on a ring and bracelet for herself and a rug for her home during the holiday season. That's up dramatically from the $200 she spent last year.

"I have been putting other people first," Thomas says. "I definitely felt I earned it."

Stores have been encouraging such self-gifting.

AnnTaylor's campaign "Perfect Presents: One for you. One for her" highlighted merchandise like brightly colored sweaters. Brookstone's print ads urged shoppers to get accessories for their iPads and other electronics with the words: "gifts for your gadgets." And Shopittome.com, an online site that alerts consumers to clothing sales they're interested in, launched "Treat Yourself Tuesday" after Thanksgiving weekend.

GOP Candidates Set for Campaign Trail

(NewsCore) - With the Christmas holidays drawing to a close, the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination are getting ready to hit the campaign trail with just eight days to go until the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

With polls in Iowa showing a fluid race, the state will see plenty of candidates up close and personal in the final week. Every candidate with the exception of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman will be there this week in a last-ditch effort to gather votes ahead of next Tuesday's caucuses.

Recent Iowa polls have shown Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney vying for the lead with Newt Gingrich not far behind.

Romney will be in both New Hampshire and Iowa Tuesday, spending the early part of the day meeting with Granite State voters in Londonderry and Portsmouth before flying to Iowa to deliver evening remarks in Davenport.

While he has made New Hampshire his firewall state, Romney has tried to compete under the radar in Iowa while carefully managing expectations in the state. On Wednesday, he begins a three-day bus tour of Iowa in an attempt to win the state.

The latest New Hampshire poll released by The Boston Globe over the weekend showed Romney with 39 percent support, ahead of Paul and Gingrich who were tied in second place with 17 percent.

Gingrich -- who spent the holidays in Virginia before flying to visit his wife's family in Wisconsin -- begins a "Jobs and Prosperity" bus tour of Iowa Tuesday which kicks off in Dubuque and will make 11 stops over three days.

The former House Speaker, who recently led in the state but has fallen victim to a barrage of negative attacks from rivals in the last few weeks, currently averages about 15 percent support in recent Iowa polls.

Paul will take Tuesday off before spending the rest of the week stumping in the Hawkeye State.

After spending Christmas in Minnesota, Bachmann returns to western Iowa, where she will hold no less than 10 events Tuesday, starting in Council Bluffs and ending in Hamlin. Bachmann is trying to achieve her goal of visiting each of Iowa's 99 counties by caucus day.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry also returns to Iowa Tuesday, making stops in the western part of the state, including Council Bluffs, Clarinda, Creston and Osceola. His campaign schedule says he will remain in the state throughout the week.

Rick Santorum, the only candidate to have visited all of Iowa's 99 counties, was already back on the trail Monday with a press availability following a pheasant hunt in Adel, Iowa. He currently places sixth in Iowa polls behind Perry and Bachmann.

After spending the holidays in Salt Lake City, Huntsman continues to ignore Iowa and will instead return to New Hampshire, where he has staked his candidacy, later in the week ahead of its Jan. 10 primary.

CUPP's PunkThis graduates to tablets, earns a degree in security (hands-on video)

Remember CUPP Computing's PunkThis board we played with at Computex 2011? It's now left the confines of its 2.5-inch hard drive form-factor and jumped ship from a standard Asus netbook to a Core i5-equipped Eee Slate EP121, taking residence alongside the tablet's battery. As a refresher, PunkThis puts a complete ARM-based system into an x86 computer by replacing the SATA HDD with a single core 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 3730 processor, 512MB RAM and WiFi, along with a mini-PCIe socket for SSD storage, plus connectors for the hosts video, audio and USB interfaces. While CUPP computing is still working hard to make PunkThis commercially available for tech-savvy individuals, it acquired Israeli security company Yoggie last July and built this demo machine to attract another kind of customer.

The tablet we tested was running Windows 7 Home Premium and Android 2.3.4 simultaneously, and was equipped with an additional button for switching between x86 and ARM modes. Since the Asus EP121 already uses a mini-PCIe SSD instead of 2.5-inch SATA storage, a prototype PunkThis board was designed to fit alongside a modified battery. Gingerbread didn't break a sweat supporting both the 1280x800-pixel capacitive touchscreen and pen-based Wacom digitizer thanks to some additional hardware and software tweaks. Beyond the ability to switch between Windows for heavy lifting and Android for improved battery life, it's possible to use both x86 and ARM side-by-side. Imagine antivirus and firewall software running on the PunkThis board in mission-critical security applications for enterprise, and it's easy to see where CUPP Computing is going with this. Check out the gallery below and our hands-on video after the break.

    A poem.

    Winter surfing at sunset

Off the California coast the golden sun is cold
?riding the lip of the earth. The wind drops
?to just a whisper of tomorrow's storm,
?in the lavendered east a twist of new moon hangs.
?A shadow slips out of the sun
?and I catch it. Standing as if on a rollicking train,
?I make a run for the shore
    ?slicing the wave in half.
    ?Peeling the wet suit?off
?it rolls down my body in shivering lurches
?gathering like black bark about my feet,
?my limbs white as a birch.
?As I dry off in the hopping cold
    ?watching the sea turn pewter,
?dolphins rise and fall, heading south.

Suicide attack kills 6 Pakistani soldiers

(AP) ? A Pakistani Taliban suicide bomber rammed a car filled with explosives into a paramilitary camp in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing six soldiers in the second attack in as many days meant to avenge the killing of senior commander in a U.S. drone strike.

The blast caused a part of a building to collapse inside the Frontier Corps camp, which was located in Bannu town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said local police officer Tahir Khan. At least 19 soldiers were wounded in the attack, and rescue workers were searching for additional casualties, he said.

A Pakistani Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press. He said it was meant to avenge the death of commander Taj Gul in a U.S. drone strike in October in the South Waziristan tribal area, a key sanctuary for the militants.

Gul was the Pakistani Taliban's operational commander in South Waziristan and was responsible for many attacks against security forces.

Around three dozen Pakistani Taliban fighters armed with assault rifles attacked a paramilitary camp in Tank district near South Waziristan before dawn Friday, killing one soldier and kidnapping 15 others.

Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said Friday that attack was also meant to avenge Gul's death. The militants targeted the soldiers because of Pakistan's alliance with the United States, he said.

Ehsan pledged they would kill the kidnapped troops, saying "we are going to cut these soldiers into pieces one by one, and we will send these pieces to their commanders."

The Pakistani Taliban has waged a fierce insurgency in Pakistan over the past four years, killing tens of thousands of security personnel and civilians. Their aim is to topple the civilian government, partly because of its alliance with the U.S., and impose Islamic law throughout the country.

Pakistan has launched a series of military offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in the northwest along the Afghan border, including in South Waziristan.

Analysts say the operations, combined with hundreds of U.S. drone attacks, have contributed to a significant decline in violence in Pakistan this year.

The number of people killed in suicide attacks in Pakistan in the first 11 months of 2011 dropped almost 40 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data compiled by the Pak Institute for Peace Studies. Deaths from all attacks by Islamist militants fell nearly 20 percent.

But violence still takes a large human toll in the country in near daily attacks. More than 2,300 people were killed in militant attacks in Pakistan through November, according to the institute.

The American Cancer Society Lost a Few More Supporters | Friendly ...

Not to rehash that whole controversy again, but here?s a story worth sharing, courtesy of blogger vnectar:

I said [to my husband,] ?Hey honey, I did a good deed today! I convinced K. not to donate money to the American Cancer Society!?.

Then I started laughing because I realized that I would sound like a monster to anyone not aware of the drama surrounding the ACS and an atheist organization who wants to donate an assload of money to them, but isn?t allowed.

Anyway, K. is organizing an event at work to raise money for a specific kind of cancer, so when she mentioned donating to ACS, I countered with links to stories about the drama and suggested a smaller charity that?s specific to the kind of cancer she?s raising money for. She agreed that the ACS isn?t worthy of her efforts, which made me feel a bit victorious.

There was no good reason for the ACS to reject money just because it came from atheists, and I hope that someone at the organization was reprimanded for turning away half a million dollars that could have gone toward a worthy cause.

But if they don?t want atheist-tainted money, there are other groups we can give our money to. And we will.

vnectar concludes her post with this:

? I realized that the ACS has no idea that their behavior is costing them donations from other avenues that aren?t at all atheist-related.

How do we let them know?

Simple: If the opportunity arises, we tell people why we?re no longer making contributions to the ACS. We point them toward other groups which focus on similar issues. We refuse to let the ACS get away with discrimination.

Also: The American Cancer Society still has a Facebook page and it?s been lacking atheist input lately?

    ?

***Update***: The ACS has responded again. And again, it?s neither accurate nor satisfactory.

The 10 Most-Influential Retailers of the Holiday Season Online (Mashable)

Amazon and Victoria's Secret are among the top retailers -- at least based on their Klout scores -- that are getting shoppers to talk about them or go to their sites this holiday season. Klout measured retailers' online influence on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Foursquare to determine the 10 retailers with the highest Klout scores. The graphic below, however, details just the retailers' Twitter activity from the past 90 days.

[More from Mashable: 5 iPhone Apps for Last-Minute Christmas Ecards [PICS]]

Amazon's score of 82 places them as the clear leader, while the nine others fall in the 70s range. The rankings exclude food retailers such as Starbucks and Whole Foods, which have scores of 78 and 75.

"Brands with high Klout scores have large, highly engaged audiences," Klout?s marketing manager Megan Berry told Mashable Tuesday. "The retweet and mentions stats give insight into a brand's social media activity -- a retailer like Amazon is more @mention based, while a brand like ThinkGeek is much more retweet heavy, indicating that they are putting out great content that their audience wants to share."

[More from Mashable: Study: Happiness Is Trending Down on Twitter [VIDEO]]

While the graphic lists the number of retweets and mentions each retailer is attracting on Twitter, Klout also looked at the the number of unique retweeters and unique people mentioning the retailers to find out whether the brands are reaching new audiences and whether those people are influential themselves.

Looking ahead to 2012, Klout is still building scoring models for seven more services that have already been integrated onto Klout users' dashboards. Klout also plans to add Quora, Yelp, Posterous, Livefyre, Disqus, bit.ly and other services.

Which brands have you been buzzing about this holiday season? Sound off in the comments.
