Possessive fear in relationships ? Current Affairs ? News That ...

For most of us, relationship with another is based on dependence, either economic or psychological.

Dependence creates fear, possessiveness, friction, suspicion and frustration. Economic dependence on another can perhaps be eliminated through legislation and proper organisation, but I am referring especially to that psychological dependence on another, which is the outcome of craving for personal satisfaction, happiness, and so on. One feels, in this possessive relationship, enriched, creative and active; one feels one?s own little flame of being is increased by another. In order not to lose this source of completeness, one fears the loss of the other, and so possessive fears come into being with all their resulting problems. Thus in this relationship of psychological dependence, there must always be conscious or unconscious fear, suspicion, that often, lies hidden in pleasant-sounding words. The reaction of this fear leads one ever to search for security and enrichment through various channels, or to isolate oneself in ideas and ideals, or to seek substitutes for satisfaction.

Though one is dependent on another, there is yet the desire to be inviolate, to be whole. The complex problem in relationship is how to love without dependence, without friction and conflict; how to overcome the desire to isolate oneself, to withdraw from the cause of conflict. If we depend for our happiness on another, on society or on environment, they become essential to us; we cling to them, and any alteration of these we violently oppose because we depend upon them for our psychological security and comfort. Though intellectually we may perceive that life is a continual process of flux, of mutation necessitating constant change, emotionally or sentimentally we cling to established and comforting values; hence there is a constant battle between change and the desire for permanency. Is it possible to put an end to this conflict?

Life cannot be without relationship, but we have made it so agonising and hideous by basing it on personal and possessive love. Can one love and yet not possess? You will find the true answer not in escape, ideals and beliefs but through the understanding of the causes of dependence and possessiveness?

As long as we do not understand individual relationship, we cannot have a peaceful society. Sine our relationship is based on possessive lobe, we have to become aware, in ourselves, of its birth, its causes and its action. In becoming deeply aware of the process of possessiveness with its violence, fears, its reactions, there comes an understanding that is whole, complete. This understanding alone frees thought from dependence and possessiveness. It is within oneself that harmony in relationship can be found, not in another, nor in environment.

In relationship, the primary cause of friction is oneself, the self that is the centre of unified craving. If we can but realise that it is not how another acts that is of primary importance, but how each one of us acts and reacts, and that if that reaction and action can be fundamentally, deeply understood, then relationship will undergo a deep and radical change? In this relationship with another, there is not only the physical problem but also that of thought and feeling on all levels, and one can be harmonious with another only when one is harmonious integrally in oneself?

To understand the complexity of relationship there must be thoughtful patience and earnestness. Relationship is a process of self-revelation in which one discovers the hidden causes of sorrow. This self-revelation is only possible in relationship.

We're eating out less, opting for chains more

Andrew Gombert / EPA

Chain restaurants are faring better than indepdendents lately.

By Allison Linn

Think of the last time you went out to eat, and be honest: Did you chow down at a favorite locally owned haunt, or opt for the familiarity of a chain restaurant?

A new report from market researchers NPD Group finds that overall, Americans are eating out less than? few years ago, as the weak economy has caused people to cut back on such splurges. Total restaurant visits have fallen every year since 2008, from 62.7 billion restaurant visits that year to 60.6 billion in 2011.

The cutbacks have hit mom-and-pop restaurants much harder than chains. The NPD Group data shows that independent restaurants now account for 27 percent of restaurant visits, down from 28 percent in 2008.

When business falls, closures are inevitable. Although the number of independent restaurants increased slightly between 2008 and 2009, many independent restaurateurs have since had to throw in the towel.

In the past two years, NPD reports that the number of independent restaurants in the U.S. has fallen by 8,652. In that same two-year period, the number of chain restaurants has increased by 1,750.

Do you tend to eat out at chain or indepdendent restaurants?

?The Godfather? in Federal Court ? Copyright/Trademark Case ...

> Interesting Cases > ?The Godfather? in Federal Court ? Copyright/Trademark?Case

An interesting copyright and trademark case was brought on February 17, 2012 in the US. District Court, Southern District of New York by Paramount Pictures Corp. against the Mario Puzo Estate. It is a dispute regarding The Godfather.?Paramount is seeking money damages, injunctive relief and declaratory judgment. Check out link: Godfather Complaint

The complaint tell us that Paramount purchased the copyright interests to the legendary novel The Godfather in 1969 from its author Mario Puzo, and then produced three blockbuster movies (the third was disappointing). Puzo died in 1999.

In a 2002 agreement, the Puzo estate was granted the right to produce one ?sequel novel? by Paramount. The parties disagreed about future rights and left that battle to another day. In 2004, The Godfather Returns was published (more than half the reviews on Amazon were only 1 or 2 stars). In 2006, without Paramount?s knowledge or consent,?the Puzo estate published a second novel, The Godfather?s Revenge (it did better, but you can buy both books for a penny on Amazon).?The Puzo estate plans to publish an additional novel, The Family Corleone.

Paramount maintains the actions by the Puzo estate caused it ?irreparable harm? and creates ?unfair competition? and is seeking a court declaration that its copyright and trademark interests were infringed. Paramount has also asked for punitive damages and attorneys? fees.

Since I am a big fan of The Godfather novel and movies, I will keep an eye out for the answer from the Puzo estate and will attempt to follow this litigation. I wonder if either side will make ?an offer they can?t refuse??

This seems really interesting, would it be alright if I made a priest with some fighting training. It would probably be based around him training to be a knight then he saw something gruesome to turn him to the path of the church.

Yep, that sounds pretty good. I'm not really going to throw people away right and left with characters. I'm hoping to create a nice flowing story is all.

So this sounds interesting, but i have one question......people can just kill your character without asking you??? o_O
I mean i've been in RP's before where RPers can die, but people usually have to ask the other person before they can just kill their character, or if someone doesn't post in the RP for like three or four days, THEN their character is fair game to be killed off by the GM unless they message the GM...or something like that.......ya know!?

No... You have the chance to be killed off through story progression. But, a character controlled by someone who's posting cannot outright kill you. You can have conflicts that end in a fight and such, but character death will not be the result of someone typing in that they sneak up behind you and kill you. I'll even add that into the rules so there is no confusion. Thanks for bringing this up. I understand how that may have come off like that.

Mmkay! Just wanted to make sure people couldn't go crazy and kill whoever they wanted whenever....lol

I'll make a CS!
First though, do you want to post a character skeleton? Or do you want us to just create a CS according to our own skeleton?? =D

I think it's better if you apply to the character what you think is appropriate, you know? Make the character your own. There aren't any definitive qualities that a person does or doesn't need in the story to make it feel real.

Mmkay!!
Gimmie a few hours........my roomie is talking a mile a minute over my shoulder...........so yeah, i probably won't be able to focus until we stop talking and she leaves for her room or something haha. [<3 her though......of course! lol]

hahaha... Take your time. There is no rush when it comes to creating an engaging story.

This sounds good mate creating a charater now

Is it ok to put pictures in the character sheet (it will be artwork not real or anime) and are we a small band of survivors that sticks together or are we all by ourselves fighting eachother and monsters?

Diabetic Snacker Reviews: Money Saving Tips To Slim Down Your ...

Cutting your household budget is a hard thing to do.
No matter what your budget allows for it seems with
prices rising as they are it's never enough.
Here's some time tested true classic tips to help
you save money on your household expenses
without breaking the bank or taking out a
loan on your mortgage.

1. Buy Store Brand NonStick Cooking Spray

These spray cans of cooking oils have turned out to be a
great economical convenience for me. At first we started
using them because they were easy but I've noticed now we
buy a ton less of cooking oils by using these. Buy canola
oil, vegetable oil, olive oil and butter flavored oils in
the spray cans. Take the tops off them & toss those
because they are way too hard to get off when you're
trying to cook, I wish manufacturers would make them
easier to remove. Put them near your stove out in plain
view so you will reach for them all the time. You can use
these just about anywhere you use the actual cooking
oils. You'll save money & calories both without any effort.
Even though I'm a huge coupon user/fan I say store brand
on this product because even with a coupon doubled you
have to pay way too much for the name brand ones. I've
tried them all & you can't tell the difference in the
store brands so go ahead and
get it.

2. Cut back on All Pepsi,Coke & Other Soda Pop

intake For Everyone
Yes, I know we just have to have it here too. I'm a big
pepsi fan myself. But at $8.50 a case it's just gotten out
of hand. That's ridiculous to pay for so have everyone in
the house figure out just how much soda pop is being
consumed at your house and agree to cut it in half if
possible. Have everyone start drinking more bottled water
since it's better for you anyway. Try making some 2 quart
pitchers of Kool-aid again. That's right Kool-aid, use 1/4
cup less sugar than called for in the recipe as it makes
it taste better & will not be so sweet making it a little
healthier for you. Actually I now make my kool-aid with
Splenda since there is no aftertaste so there's no
calories involved at all. I use kroger's brand of splenda
store brand is what I'm saying it's much cheaper.

3. Start double cooking the quantity of your meals
eating leftovers; Don't freeze them
Cook some meals in double size portions & make everyone
actually have leftovers the next day. It can either be the same
meal eaten again or be creative & turn the leftovers into
a totally different meal the 2nd time around. My family
won't eat anything leftover from the freezer so I can't
recommend stocking up the freezer with precooked meals. I
say cook the double batch & eat it twice that same week.
Don't bother to go to all the trouble of freezing it.

4. Drink Ice Cold Tap Water At The Dinner Table Nightly

This is a great new resolution to start. Water is so much
healthier for us than anything else. It also helps fill
you up when you think you're hungry. Everyone in the
family can be better served by boosting their water intake
a little. Hey, you might actually like it and you're
already paying for it. You're paying for your tap water
on a montly basis aka water bill, so you should be
drinking it.

5. Fix Up Some Premade Food Snacks For Hungry Times

Grab those ziploc (store brand), snack size bags or
baggies & grab all the snacks in the house down from the
cabinets & the pantry. Look on the nutrition labels of
each one & put single serving sizes of them into each
baggie. Put them in a huge basket & leave them there.
Anyone running out can grab one to eat on their way to
somewhere without stopping at a fast food drive thru and
spending more money. Besides,
you'll be amazed at what an actual serving size is for
most foods especially snacks. Make the family eat these
first before clearing out the cabinets.
People at home will definitely grab one of the snack bags
whenever they want a snack. I guarantee you the snack
baggies are smaller amounts of anything your family's been
eating on a regular basis.
There's a huge difference in grabbing a new bag of chips &
finishing off half the bag & eating a correct serving of
say 10 Chips. It's enough to cure their hunger pains or
their cravings and you'll save a lot of money in the long
run. Don't overstuff any of the baggies. Put exactly one
serving size in each one. If you have tiny children at
home you can make up special ones for them with probably
half of a serving.

6. Make your 100% Juices go further by watering them down

just a little. Take your big bottle of juice & pour
2 cups into a 2qt pitcher. Fill the rest up with water.
Over ice this will be a nice refreshing drink. It will be
lightly flavored of the juice & will be much healthier.
Since you'll mainly be drinking water you'll save a ton of
money everytime you do this. No one needs to chug down
straight shots of expensive juice all the time.
7. Go out to your laundry room & get out all the dryer
sheet boxes you have. Take them to your kitchen & using
your kitchen shears, cut by the stacks full all of them in
half. Dryer loads come out just as good with a half of a
static sheet rather than a whole one. They charge way too
much money for those. I only buy the store brand unscented
ones for us which will save you about $50 a year.

8. Buy flat textured surface hand towels to use as
table napkins

Start setting everyone's place setting with
a folded cloth napkin. You'll save a ton of money by not
buying as many paper napkins. Since they cost about $4.00
for 100 of them & the average person eating a meal uses at
least 3 figure that out. Your saving big bucks.

9. Stop buying Hostess or other expensive overpriced
cupcakes

They are way overpriced & they are not even a bit good for you. You can do better at such a cost difference.Make some
cupcakes of your own every week & have them out in the
cake taker for everyone to snack on or for dessert. Leave
them plain or dust them with powdered sugar or cool whip.
If you really want the twinkie or cupcake taste squire
some cool whip inside of your finished cake from the
bottom & then frost with frosting. The box of cake mix can
be bought for sometimes 88cents & it makes 24 cupcakes.
The Hostess ones are about $5.50 a box or more & you only
get 8 of them! As long as you make cupcakes once every
couple of weeks no one will miss the Hostess goodies.

10. Stop eating out!
Make eating out a once a month
thing or less. That's right once a month. If you write down
how much your family is spending on eating out you might
have a heart attack reading the numbers.

11. Pack a lunch or a good healthy snack
Or skip lunch altogether & just have a healthy
snack everyday at lunchtime.

12. For Spaghetti meals that use 1lb of ground beef cut it
down to 1/2 lb

but chop the meat finer. No one will miss
the other 1/2 lb of meat and you'll save a lot of money.
Plus the meal will be so much better for you.

13. Make your own garlic bread, garlic toast

It's super
simple & much
cheaper. Fix up a whole loaf at a time & freeze them. Look
at that, the next time you use just 6 slices of those you
saved about $6.50.

14. Make your own french fries

When you buy a bag of
french fries did you know that in that bag is actually 1
or 2 potatoes? That's right you just paid $3.79 for 2
potatoes. Buy a whole bag of potatoes for $5.00 & fix 2 of
them yourself into fries or baked fries.

15. Get all your fruits & vegetables at your local farmer's
market

You'll save lots of cash & they will be fresher.

16. Every 2 or 3 days check your fridge for possible
leftovers that are in there covered in foil

Add them to
the next meal in some way or decide that this is the next
day's lunch for yourself. You bought it so don't waste it.

17. Start keeping Jell-0 (store brand) in the fridge ALWAYS
Make up a couple of boxes at one time & put them into
individual serving size dishes. Everyone loves jell-o &
it's cheap. Add fruit if you'd like or dress it up with
cool whip topping. People are basically lazy. But if they
open the fridge & spot something already in a dish just
for them, they'll eat it.
I keep sugar free jell-o in the fridge at all times. That
with a dab of fat free cool whip is the perfect snack and
it's only 10 calories!

18. Make your own cool whip topping
Look up a recipe but
all it is is whipped cream. Buy cans of evaporated skim
milk & put them in the fridge to use just for making your
own cool whip. You don't have to buy real whipping cream,
as long as you have the evaporated milk really cold, it
will give the same result. Add a tablespoon of sugar and a
bit of vanilla extract and it's heavenly whipped topping.

19. Start making pudding for desserts
It's very economical
& everyone will love it. Do it like the jell-o, put it in
individual 1/2 cup dishes. You can make your own even
cheaper than buying the boxed type. I'm a huge chocolate
pudding fan and it will make you feel like you've just had
the best most decadent candy bar with over 300 caloires,
while in reality you're satisfied and only about 100
calories!

20. If you smoke quit
Figure out how much money you spend
on smoking everyday, be honest here. Take that amount of
money & put it in your pocket, just a day's worth. Now
everyday when you want a cigarette pull that money out of
your pocket & leave it in front of you for the rest of the
day. Everytime you get the urge to smoke pull it back out
of your pocket as needed.

21. Plan your meals around your weekly sale ad using a list
& a menu

Also match up your coupons to all items that you
can. Use your store shopping card. Go online & add your
card to their site usually it will preload coupons onto it
too.

22. Buy only generic prescription drugs
Use a pharmacy
coupon. Most pharmacies now will let you use a
competitor's coupon which is great. I have over $200 of
free gift cards right now just by using a competitor's
coupon everytime I fill a prescription. I plan on using
the free money for buying grocery items that they have in
their stores which is quite a few things.

23. Look over your pantry stockpile often to use up things
that have been sitting out there

It's not a
savings if you buy it but don't ever use it. It's just a
waste of money if you let it expire. Use it up cook
something in a new way and just try it out. Have a
sampling night and cook some pantry stapes that've been
in their awhile. Everyone will love trying a bit of this
and a little of that for dinner. It will be like you are
at your favorite family buffet.

24. Make up some homemade trail mixes
with all your pantry
goodies. Use those extra bits of cereals no one is eating
& mix & match. You can find many recipes for these mixes
online. Fix them up & make the little snack bags with
them. These are very good for you and so easy to assemble.

25. Only buy your loaves of bread
at the bread thrift
stores. We have a hostess one in our area but there are
many other's. Freeze the bread so you always have it on
hand. Also, you can use your bread machine to make your
own cheaper breads more on that below.

26. Pull out your bread machine again
& start using it.
Remember you can make your own pizza crusts, dinner
rolls,bagels,huge soft pretzels,french bread,italian
bread, cinnambon buns,doughnuts,buns.... with it. Use it to
save at least $20 every week on your baked goods.
It's amazing what a bit of flour can make.
29.Stop buying pre made pie crusts, biscuits. Make your
own.

27. Buy the milk that's on sale each week
By that I mean
pay attention to the ads. If the half gallon jugs are on
sale one week don't buy the gallon sized ones. I see many
people at the grocery store just grab some milk not even
noticing they just paid $5 for a gallon when they could
have bought 2 half gallons for $2.50 total! That's one of
my pet peeves, sorry. We use about 6-7 gallons a week so I
do pay attention closely to which milk we buy.

28. Pull out your spices often
Use some that you don't use
all the time every once in awhile to change a dish up just
a bit. Put them to use, you bought them so use them. Try
a new flavor every week you might enjoy it.

29. Buy Kosher salt in the big box instead of the table
salt in the little cartons

Sure kosher salt is about $6
but it will equal about 14 of those little round blue
containers that are now up to $2 each.

30. Stop buying tv guide every week
out of habit! Find out
if anyone is still actually using it at your house. If
they are search online for free tv guide. Usually all the
time you can find a free 1 yr. subscription for it
somewhere. Fill it out & once you start getting it stop
buying it. With all the features now on home dvr's I doubt
anyone is even still reading the tv guide.

31. Still buying Woman's Day & Family Circle
every month at
the checkout? Stop buying it, break the habit cycle. You
can read both of them & hundreds of complete magazines
online for free. Save that money for more food items. Just
search for your favorite
magazines online thru google.

32. Buy eggs in the 2&1/2 dozen medium sized cartons

instead of the 2 large egg cartons every week. It's much
more economical & they last an entire month or more. You
don't need to buy eggs every week that way.

33. Join Sam's Club
buy some of your goods there. Sure,
not everything is cheaper but quite a few things are. We
always buy our Kraft Parmesan cheese there in the huge
bottle instead of those expensive little green cans at the
market. Fruits are much fresher there too than our local
Kroger. Take your calculator with you & do the unit price
math on some of the items to determine the best price. If
you can get it cheaper elsewhere, don't buy it.
This especially true of pepsi & coke products at
Sam's---Don't buy them there they are overpriced! Do
your shopping homework and you can get some good bulk
purchasing deals at Sam's Club.

34. If your family uses the little paper cups
in the
bathroom everyday buy them at Sam's Club instead. You get
600 of them for about $7 instead of paying $4.75 for 80 of
them at the grocery store. This is a big Savings so only
buy these at Sam's. Now tell everyone they are limited to
1 tiny cup in the bathroom per day. I know it sounds mean
but seriously my son can go thru 8 of them in a day
himself! Have them turn theirs upside down & place it over
their standing toothbrush. It's right there in their site
& no confusion about whose it is. If they don't want to do
that make them use a marker for their
intial so they limit themselves to one cup a day. They'll
get used to it and you won't constantly be running out of
those little cups.

35. It's actually cheaper to buy canned green beans
at the
store than fresh. I know odd but true. If you cook up a
few cans at at ime in your crockpot with a couple of
chicken boullion cubes they will taste more like fresh
greenbeans. I keep a crockpot of them all the time in the
fridge for some healthy side dishes for me.

I hope from all these tips you walk away with a little
more knowledge about ways you can save extra money everyday
for your family with just a little bit of practice.

If none of these tips work for you and all else fails you can go
get yourself a
Recession Loan

The Long History Of Badminton | Ezine Free Articles

Badminton, that game played with light racquets and a funny looking thing called a shuttlecock (or bird), actually has a long and storied history. The sport first appeared in China around 500 BC. It was called Ti Jian Zi and was played with a birdlike object and one?s feet.

Five centuries later the game came to be known as Battledore or ?the old rackets?. It became quite popular in China,Japan, India and Greece. Two persons played it with small rackets (the battledores) made of rows of gut stretched or parchment on wooden frames. The shuttlecocks used in Battledore were made from some light material such as cork, trimmed with feathers.

The sport next surfaced in the 16th century where it was played by the European nobility and was known as ?jeu de Volant,? which was French for ?wheel game.? It consisted of hitting a small ball with the palm of one?s hand.

The sport as we recognize it today was created by British military officers in India in the mid-18th century. It was particularly popular in the British garrison town of Poona so was known as Poona for a period of time.

Retired British Army officers took the game to England where its rules were developed. It was officially launched in 1873 at the Badminton House, Gloucestershire ? hence the name badminton.

Badminton in the United States
America?s first club was the Badminton Club of New York, which was founded in 1878. Badminton?s popularity took off in the 1930s as YMCAs, schools and hundreds of new badminton clubs offered lessons in the sport. Its popularity was also spurred in the 1930s due to the avid play of such Hollywood stars as James Cagney, Douglas Fairbanks, Dick Powell, Boris Karloff, Bette Davis and Ginger Rogers.

How badminton compares with other sports
One of the more interesting things about this sport is that it is played with a shuttlecock, a projectile with feathers, which causes it to fly differently from the balls used in other sports. The feathers of a shuttlecock create a much higher drag, so that it decelerates much faster than a ball.

While there have never been definitive studies done comparing badminton with other sports, there is a general agreement that it ? especially the singles version ? requires more aerobic stamina than tennis while tennis requires greater upper body and core strength.

It is also generally agreed that the game definitely requires more explosive athleticism than tennis and a somewhat greater explosive athleticism than squash. It also requires significantly faster reaction times than either squash or tennis.

Family fun or cutthroat competition
Another thing that makes this game unique is that it can be played for fun or as serious competition. If you ever see Olympic badminton, you will know what we mean ? it?s incredibly fast paced and requires an amazing athleticism. Yet, you can also spend as little as $19.95, put up a court in your backyard and watch your kids spend hours battling each other for family bragging rights. And that?s certainly something you can?t say about football, basketball or even tennis.

Visit BadmintonEquipment.org for information on choosing everything from a badminton set for some backyard family fun to the badminton equipment you will need to play badminton competitively.

Glideaway Ace displays potential for grabbing the Sis Live Open ...

Glideaway Ace displays potential for grabbing the Sis Live Open 525 Final on 23rd February

Shelbourne Park will become home for Sis Live Open 525 Final on Thursday, 23rd February. The winner will get awarded with the ?1,000 prize money.

One of the most promising entries is Glideaway Ace, Ace Hi Rumble?s three-year-old black son out of bitch Darkies Fergus, has only made two outings during the 2012 season. On 31st January, Glideaway Ace did not race.

His second start was on 16th February in the Sis Live Open 525 Semi-Final at Shelbourne Park. Under training P. Cronin, Glideaway Ace clocked the 525 yards distance in 28.64 seconds and only had a shoulder?s margin from the runner up of the race, Danmar Benny, who was reeling in for the wire.

The evening?s favourite, Jacobs Courage, finished the race in the end.

The three-year-old has only been given two chances, one of which he could not even truly exploit and the other he grabbed right away which reflects that given another opportunity, Glideaway Ace will not disappoint his connections.

The two-year-old Courtlough Rio, Droopys Vieri?s white and blue son out of bitch Fois Gras, has only raced once during the 2012 season. However, Courtlough Rio made the most out of it and credited the race as his seasonal debut victory against his name.

He won the Sis Live Open 525 Semi-Final on 16th February at Shelbourne Park over 525 yards. He raced through the distance in 28.89 seconds, leading by 3 ? lengths. His success got him the ?1, 000 prize money.

Spider Man the 6/4 favourite of the race, finished third in line after the winner.

Yet another capable entry who has sustained her performance during the two starts of the new season is Black Hall Pearl, Hallucinate?s five-year-old black daughter out of bitch Carrigeen Leonie. ?

She was second in the Grade A1 Shelbourne A1 550 on 5th January against Tyrur Lanney who clocked the distance in 30.26 seconds. The 6/4 favourite of the race, Tolerton Crasher, finished fourth behind the winner.

In Black Hall Pearl?s next attempt on 16th February, she was second under contention with Courtlough Rio, who was on the other side of the wire before any of the rest could make it.

Courtlough Rio and Black Hall Green have raced together before, what changes get incorporated after today?s race, will not take long to unfold. ???

Steven Moore ? Blog Archive ? News and Notices from the Writing ...

News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #19?

#117:? Shah Wharton?s interview of me is now followed by my guest post titled ?How British Sci-Fi Influenced My Writing.?? This provides some insight into what influences my writing and why I feel writers should also be avid readers.? It might have special resonance with my UK fans.? See: http://wordsinsync.blogspot.com/2012/02/british-influence-on-sci-fi-by-steven-m.html

Shah runs three sites that include Words In Sync (see above), her own author page, and a site from which she can ?beautify your blog? (see the excellent job she did with subheadings and images in my guest blog post).? Words In Sync also contains interviews, reviews, and hints for writers, and can be used as a launch platform to her other two sites.

#118:? If you missed it last Friday, check out the interview of my character Brent Mueller.? It will provide some insight into Survivors of the Chaos and the soon-to-be-released Sing a Samba Galactica.? Both books are more sci-fi than thriller, so it is appropriate that at the end of the interview you can use Shah Wharton?s comment to go to her Words In Sync website and read my guest post ?How British Sci-Fi Influenced My Writing? (see #117).

#119:? I don?t know how she does it, but Elizabeth Sims continues to organize and expand upon what I?ve learned about the writing trade.? Check out ?7 Simple Ways to Make a Good Story Great? in March/April?s Writer?s Digest.? Here are her points: 1) Go beyond the five senses; 2) embrace idiosyncrasies; 3) forget about being pretty; 4) be true to your IQ; 5) use only your best material only when it has a purpose; 6) make them laugh; 7) make them cry.

Elizabeth greatly expands on these points, of course, and I don?t wish to steal her thunder (and my apologies if she means something completely different), but here are my own comments:? 1) For me, the main point is body language.? Human beings, like their great ape cousins, depend on body language for much of their communication, more so than we realize.? Shows like The Mentalist and Psych illustrate how important this can be and good actors like Jack Nicholson, Judi Dench, or Denzel Washington masterfully employ it.? Nothing beyond ?he said? or ?she said? need ever be used in your written dialog, especially if you employ body language for your characters? communication.

2) Characters, especially main characters, should not be 2D.? One way to add that extra dimension is to give them idiosyncrasies, because almost every human being has them?in fact, not having any is itself an idiosyncrasy.? 3) By pretty, Elizabeth means using a fancy word or phrase to show off your mastery of the Queen?s English when you should focus on the average fellow?s English, especially dialog (average defined by the character?s natural milieu, of course).? 4) Elizabeth means here that you should know something about your intended audience and what they expect in a book.? This can work against 3), in the sense that you shouldn?t dumb your prose down too much.? For sci-fi or techno-thriller authors, a certain amount of specialized information and vocabulary is expected.? The plot complexity also must be a function of your intended audience.

5) Elizabeth means here that you should include only what?s necessary.? In my soon-to-be-released Angels Need Not Apply, I needed a Mossad agent as an incidental plot device.? The ?incidental part? became a hang-up, but I soon realized that by making her a woman working undercover as a U.S. citizen made her not so incidental.? I still dedicate fewer words to her (she continues to nag me about that) but her role became more important.? On the other hand, I eliminated five characters that I really liked, but they?re saved on my hard disk for future writing.

6) and 7) are obvious.? Your characters are human.? Even in tough times, they can be in funny situations and/or do funny things.? Same comment about being sad.? However, Elizabeth is referring to the requirement that these emotions carry over to the reader who absolutely must become involved with the emotion and excitement that you are trying to convey.? Of course, this is subjective?some readers will react and others won?t, but your audience of readers will if you have taken care of 1) through 5).

So, again, kudos to Elizabeth.? These are all points I have learned the hard way (and still often fail to employ when crazed by the writing fever)?it?s nice to have them all contained in a concise list.? (There are a few items I would add?see my December 22 blog post ?The Eightfold Way.?? Between Elizabeth?s seven and my eight suggestions, you can?t go wrong!)

#119:? Steven James article ?5 Story Mistakes even Good Writers Make,? also in the March/April Writer?s Digest, is less useful only because his points are more obvious.? However, every author should review them and pay heed.? Here they are in a short list: 1) Overdoing symbolism/themes; 2) trying too hard (this relates to Elizabeth?s point 3); 3) failing to anticipate the readers? response (see author Mike Nettleton?s Nov. 21, 2011 guest post ?Sleazy Is as Sleazy Does?); 4) using a hook as a gimmick; 5) leaving readers hanging (but see my posts ?Tell Me It Isn?t So, Jeffery Deaver,? from June 23, 2011, and ?Writing a Series?Pros and Cons,? from February 9, 2011).

The problem with articles on writing like those of Ms. Sims, Mr. James, and the ones I wrote, is that it is hard for an author to keep all these points in mind as he or she is writing.? Your best bet is to write, write, write?and then review these points in your editing process.? After two or three books, you can almost do it on cruise control.

#120:? Speaking of Writer?s Digest, when are they going to come out with an eZine version?? The times are a-changin? and WD is not keeping up with them.? I and many others would like to just cancel our forest-killing pZine subscriptions and download our eZine every month.? If a new publication like eFiction can do it, why not the venerable WD?? Numbers 118 and 119 above show that I still find that some WD articles are useful?I would just prefer to read them on my Kindle.? Maybe the key word here is ?venerable??? Have they become so old and conservative that they just wish the eBook revolution would go away?

WD certainly pushes the legacy publishing paradigm of the Big Six, the one that is associated with pBooks more than eBooks, while eBooks are often associated with indie authors.? But maybe I have it wrong?? Maybe WD has made some kind of super marketing study and has determined that most of their readers are writers who still sit around waiting for that special agent who will lead them to a huge book contract with one of the Big Six??legacy nirvana,? if you will.? Your comments will be appreciated.? I don?t have the funds to finance market studies but I can get some idea from comments.? Write me with yours.? Better still, write WD?you can mention me, Steven M. Moore, WD pZine subscriber!

#121:? Amazon has just deleted over 4000 IPG titles from its eBook lists.? The Independent Publishers Group represents some 500 academic and charitable organizations (e.g. American Cancer Society).? This action is another war in the battle over eBook pricing.? Amazon lost the last one with Macmillan.

Here?s my take:? I don?t know how many of the eBooks affected can be considered non-fiction and academic titles, but these books traditionally have been over-priced and inaccessible to students, for example, except as used pBooks.? Generally speaking, big publishing houses want you to pay almost as much for an eBook edition as a pBook, which is absurd, especially since the eBook edition is often hastily put together.? IPG is not one of the Big Six, but by being a ?group,? they are big enough.? Is Amazon at least partly in the right here?

On the other hand, I?ve said it before and I?ll say it again:? indie authors tend to under-price their books.? Months or years of work are represented in a price of $0.99.? IPG?s argument is generalizable:? Is there a point where an eBook?s price is so low that people think it?s crap?? In particular, should indie authors give their eBooks away, even as a promotional gimmick?? My answers to these questions are yes and no.? I don?t know where the ?knee in the curve? is (engineering speak for when the public generally stops associating a low price with schlock), but I know there is one, probably dependent on genre.? For promotional gimmicks, I can understand a sale price but never giving your work away!

I?ve had enough people say they enjoy my eBook X or Y lately that I began to wonder.? Material handed out in local libraries clears this up.? Indie authors don?t need to give their books away.? Their readers can borrow them from a public library.? I suspect that Amazon even provides the model for the instruction sheets on how to download to your Kindle and libraries then personalize it.? This makes it terribly difficult for an indie author to develop any kind of marketing strategy, especially for niche non-fiction books.? There are no metrics available on how well your strategy is working!

While I?m not interested in making a living selling my books?I?m more interested in increasing the number of readers?I do want to cover my expenses.? Moreover, other fellow authors do want to either make a living or at least augment their incomes.? None of this is easy to do if we give away our work or the reading public only borrows from public libraries.? Have a heart, readers!? If you kill the geese that lay the golden eggs, there aren?t any more eggs to read.

In libris libertas!

Anxiety And Mood Disorder Risk - Computer Program May Help ...

A study in the open access journal PLoS One shows that computer programs can be designed to differentiate between the brain scans of healthy adolescents and those most at risk of developing psychiatric disorders like anxiety and depression. The researchers indicate that there is a possibility of designing computer programs that could accurately predict which at-risk adolescents will subsequently develop these disorders. To predict precisely which individual adolescent will suffer from psychiatric disorders in the future is currently impossible, as there are no known biomarkers, i.e...
